Ask Better for Blurbs: How Poets Request Help Without Burning Bridges

By rc-superuser2 · Sep 06, 2023

Introduction: SOS Etiquette

Every poet gets stuck—on a line, a thesis, a submission packet. The difference between getting help and getting ghosted is how you ask.

Title the Problem

“Could you look at the pacing in section two?” beats “Thoughts?” Attach no more than five pages; bold the specific question.

Show Your Work

Say what you tried, what failed, and what constraints you’re holding. Respect your reader’s time; offer a deadline and an easy opt-out.

Close the Loop

Thank promptly. Report what advice you used. Later, offer reciprocity without keeping score.

Conclusion

Community is craft multiplied. Ask well; answer well; the poem gets better and so does the field.
